Life Update: A Man With Many Hats
With this being my first blog post that serves as a life update, I have much to say! Here at Alabama A&M, I wear a few different hats. Not only do I serve as a brand ambassador for The HistoryMakers, but I am a Historian in The Honors Program, Resident Assistant in a freshman dorm, and a business owner.
I arrived at school on July 21st, and I’ve been moving non stop since then. July 21st was the day that my RA duties began. This was nearly a month before the other students arrived on campus. We had to check rooms for cleanliness, replace broken and/or damaged furniture, attend workshops, and develop programs for the residents. The tasks were very demanding, but I made sure to keep a good attitude, and put my best foot forward. Due to my position as RA, I was able to meet with my hall director Synethea Anderson to discuss incorporating The HistoryMakers into my programs for the dorm. After giving Ms. Anderson a brief rundown of my plans, she was both enthused and encouraging.
Aside from the administrative, and manual labor tasks of serving as a RA, I have had a chance to meet a lot of new students. I am really happy that I am placed with the freshmen, especially the ones in my dorm. They are very receptive to me, and they often look to me for assistance with school, and their personal lives. It’s safe to say that despite the heavy demands, I really enjoy what I do.
In regards to my photography business, things are going well. A lot of my friends have been acknowledging the growth they’ve seen in me since we first met. I really enjoy hearing the compliments, it’s very encouraging. I had two photoshoots to take this weekend. I plan on using my talents to provide headshots to the honors program here at school too.
This year is my second year serving as historian for the Alabama A&M honors program. My first year went well, but this year feels much better. I have some good events planned that I didn’t get a chance to host last year.
The honors induction ceremony is a special one in which students are inducted into the program. Fortunately, I was able to have my ceremony in person. The past two years have been virtual, so we have to video certain parts and live stream it on YouTube. Because of this, I have been able to sharpen my skills as a videographer. I don’t offer that service with my business. but I often get practice when I serve as historian for various organizations.
Originally, classes were supposed to begin in person on August 26. Due to the concerning amount of cases and students in quarantine, the administration decided to delay face to face classes. Tomorrow, September 13th will be my first time going to class face to face since I was a freshman in college. I am very excited to see my professors and classmates. I also prefer going to class in person over virtually, because I am able to retain information a lot better.
Below are four photos. One is of a resident who offered me breakfast while I worked the morning shift. The next one is the a behind the scenes photo of the honors induction video. Second to last is a photo of the dorm that I work in. Lastly, I attached a photo that I took at Every Sunny Wednesday. Every Sunny Wednesday is a weekly campus event.
