Hampton University Student Ambassador Update
This week, Hampton University students returned from spring break.
As for the Black History Month Contest, we are making adjustments to the report that will submit to The HistoryMakers including obtaining the majors of each of the participants and providing video evidence of the competition taking place.
My fellow Student Ambassador, Lillian Jackson and I are aiming to have a table in the Student Center promoting The HistoryMakers on April 5th from 4-6 PM. Upon reflecting from the last experience with having a table, this time, I will have my laptop out on the table with the digital archive open for students to use. I will also encourage themselves to search two things about themselves, such as their hobbies, favorite place, etc.
Additionally, I emailed my professor in my Stuttering course (Mrs. Alva Cook) about scheduling a time to have students use The HistoryMakers Digital Archive to enhance their knowledge on adults who stutter, or those who have overcame their stuttering. Upon searching in the archive, I found that James Earl Jones (1931-) discusses his stuttering in several of the interview clips. Previously in my course, my professor chose to highlight James Earl Jones and his stuttering by showing clips from talk show interviews. I found the clips of James Earl Jones discussing his stuttering within the archive to be a enriching experience, and I look forward to sharing that knowledge with my cohort.
Moreover, for the last week of Women’s History Month, I want to highlight women HistoryMakers who are alumni of Hampton University or who have made contributions within the Hampton Roads area on HistoryMakers Instagram page. Some HistoryMakers I have in mind include Katherine Johnson (1918-2020) and aerospace engineer Christine Darden (1942-).
Lastly, I was inspired by Student Ambassador Izzy Torkornoo’s (Wellesley College) outreach to one of the fashion organizations on her campus. I reached out the fashion organization on our campus, BRAG to see if they would be interested in learning more about The HistoryMakers Digital Archive and some of the StyleMakers and other entrepreneurs featured in the archive.
