Wellesley College
ISABEL (IZZY) TORKORNOO (she/her/hers) from New York CIty, is a first-generation Ghanaian-American young woman who currently attends Wellesley College. At Wellesley, Izzy has continued her passion for global Black studies by majoring in Africana Studies. Her courses have created an expansive understanding of the vastness and incredible diversity of the African Diaspora across the world. She has also furthered her interests in education through becoming and Education minor and has aspirations to increase the presence and centrality of global Black studies in K-12 curricula. With a love for the spoken word and her own family’s oral traditions, Izzy brings a level of deep intentionality to the work of The HistoryMakers. Izzy is a rising senior at Wellesley and will graduate in the Spring of 2023.
Spelman College
Hello, My name is MILENA CLARK. I am a current Sophomore at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. I live in Maryland with my parents, Lance Clark (Sr.) and Shawn Washington-Clark, and I have one older brother named Lance Clark (Jr.). I was a military child growing up, and due to this, I have lived in many different places. I was born in Washington State and lived in Virginia and South Carolina but Maryland is where I have lived the longest, for about eleven years now. My family has deep roots in Charleston, South Carolina. Both my parents grew up there and the majority of my extended family lives in the state. When it comes to my love for history, I would have to give it to my father. He really got me involved in different aspects of history that I know come to enjoy. I am extremely thankful to be chosen as an Ambassador for History Makers.
Howard University
ZOÉ COKER (she/her) is currently a rising Junior in the Department of African American Studies at Howard University in Washington, DC. She is a published poet and utilizes the poetics of the everyday to mechanize her writings. She is also a student worker at the Moorland Spingarn Research Center, where she is training to become a future archivist. Her research interests include African American Music and Culture with a concentration in Jazz History. After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans on continuing her studies at New York University with a Masters in Archives and Public History.
Grambling State University
FAITH KELLY CARR is a Louisiana native and senior at Grambling State University. Born in Homer, Louisiana, she spent most of her childhood interested in African American History.Educating others regarding African American history is her passion.She is majoring in History with a minor in Africana studies.She is a force within her community through several organizations including the Carter G. Woodson History Club, NAACP and is a member of Phi Alpha Theta,the American History Honors Society. She has a profound interest in historical archives and the preservation of Black history, especially that which has been overlooked. She has also been featured as a host on an oral history podcast, put on by her university’s history department called “Voices of Grambling”. Her goal is to pursue a PhD in African American studies and become a professor of African American history. Faith's favorite scripture and life motto is 1 Corinthians 16:14: “ Do everything in love.”
North Carolina A&T State University
Born in Atmore, Alabama , SANIA DACUS is an accomplished student currently majoring in history at the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. History has been her favorite subject since she could remember, and it was an easy choice when deciding what exactly her major was going to be. Throughout her journey so far, at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, she has maintained a 3.95 gpa while also managing her social and work life excellently. Sania has plans to go to law school in two years, where she will graduate to begin a career in corporate law and then civil rights law. Ultimately, having the goal of fighting for an end to the mass incarceration epidemic in America. Fighting against mass incarceration has been on her mind since her eleventh grade year, and continues to be a pressing issue for her today. Sania hopes that she can be a part of the change that she wants to see in the world.
Prairie View A&M University
My name is DELICIA DRAIN, and I attend Prairie View A&M University. I am a junior and Psychology major who is looking to continue my education in graduate school where I will obtain my Doctorate of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology. Making this vigorous goal more obtainable, I will use my burning passion for writing and saving mental health to help keep my spark ablaze. I also have a passion for musical theater - whether it be performing or watching - and this has greatly assisted my public speaking skills and emotional expression. In addition, I love to workout and have participated in all four years of my high school’s varsity Track & Field team, teaching me discipline and endurance. With this, I have used all my hobbies and experiences to shape the person I am today, making me the sociable, goal oriented, and compassionate African American woman that I am today.
