Smokey Robinson/ Life Update

Greetings !

I have been typing blog posts for some months now, and I have made an executive decision to change the format up. Enjoy as I update you all on my life, findings, and progress.

Video Observations

Smokey Robinson is a music icon from Detroit Michigan. He was a singer, songwriter, and former executive producer. He also founded a well known musical group called the Miracles. An interesting fact that I learned was that Smokey Robinson founded Motown Records along with Mr. Berry Gordy. Prior to the interview, I only knew Smokey Robinson for his name. I had no idea what he looked like or sounded like. It was nice to finally put a face to the name. Mr. Robinson has written thousands of songs during his career. The one that I am most familiar with is “My Girl”, which he wrote for The Temptations. Mr. Robinson has been groomed for the entertainment industry all of his life, and his legacy definitely speakers to his dedication to the industry. He mentioned that his mother really pushed for him to get his name out at an early age. He also lived very close to many renowned artists. I had no idea that Detroit was so saturated with musical talent.  During his interview Mr. Robinson talked about how he got the idea to write his popular song Quiet storm. I went to YouTube to check it out, and I really enjoyed it. Smokey Robinson is truly remarkable.

Life Update

This semester is coming to an end and things are getting Hectic! I’ve been handling my academics while working 3 jobs! I have a photography business and the end of each semester is always a busy time for me. I will add some of my recent shoots to the blog post.

In other news, my university elected to keep the school open during thanksgiving. Because of this decision, my co-workers and I will have to work in the dorm through the week. I am not sure if I will travel to Texas with my family yet, but this could be my first time away from family during a holiday. It’s kind of a surreal feeling because I used to always wonder what it was like to work during a holiday and now I'm at the age to find out.

One last thing that I think is worth mentioning. I cut my hair off on last Sunday! This may not sound like a big deal for those of you who haven’t known me for a long time, but I’ve had relatively long hair for most of my life. I am very intentional about not identifying with conditional things, but people usually identified me by my hair. Now that my hair is not as unique, people don’t notice me as easily. It’s still taking some getting used to. I had a signature hairstyle where I had individual braids with waves in the back of my head. Having a short haircut has been very refreshing. I know feeling more mature looking and I feel very presentable when I am in professional spaces.

Progress with Promotion

I have had the pleasure of being able to promote the archive in an untraditional way. Prior to moving in, I envisioned myself hosting large zoom sessions, but now I find myself having more one on one interactions. I also need to meet with two groups of students but coordination has been a struggle. Hopefully we will be able to make my plans a reality very soon! All of the people that I have exposed to the archive have found it to be resourceful. That’s been great to hear!
